CISSA Basketball Wrap-up

The CISSA basketball season is now finished with 7 SSIS teams playing in cross-river tournaments on Saturday May 14th. In all cases the teams represented the school with pride and were competitive in all of their games.

For the senior (grade 7&8) teams, the girls traveled to Suzhou for their tournament. Throughout the games the grade 7 team players, as they have done through the season, showed improvements in their ability to read the plays, defend strongly and work effectively as a team. Niru Venkatesh played particularly well in the tournament, showing confidence in controlling the offensive end of the court. For the grade 8 team, Jing Wen New showed the value of her SISAC experience and leadership in all aspects of her team’s performance. Coaches Chen Zhang Hao and Erica Neal have done an excellent job of developing these players, ably supported by student coach Pei Wen.

The senior boys’ teams played at SAS Puxi. Both teams had very close games and showed the improvements they had made throughout the season. They played effectively as a team with some great passing to create many scoring opportunities. Special mention must go to student coach John Hong (Grade 11) who refereed back to back games all day, including stepping up to help out in the rep game. SSIS players in the rep game were Baptiste Martin, Kim Seong Gyeong, Jorge Chicot Vina and Oh Hyun Woo.

The junior (grade 5&6) girls team were coached the entire season by two student coaches Melody Hsieh and Cathy Liu. These two did a remarkable job of developing the skills and teamwork of their charges and the improvements were noticeable. The team played their best basketball of the season at the tournament, with all players stepping up to the challenge. The rep player for the team was Ayushi Joshi who did a great job of securing rebounds and scoring many of the team’s baskets. Another notable performer throughout the season was Solene Kok, who showed strong leadership in encouraging and supporting her team mates.

The largest group of players with 24 on the day, the junior boys had their tournament at SAS Pudong. Their development this season has been particularly noticeable, and one of the most pleasing aspects for the coaches was the way in which the stronger players included those who were not as strong in all of the plays. As a group they showed great enthusiasm and commitment throughout the season with some excellent performances at the tournament. Thanks to Coaches Gabriel Olmeda and Jody Liguori with great support from student coaches/referees Ben Chiang and Jason Tan.

Congratulations to all players and coaches on a very successful CISSA basketball season.
